When Did Abu Bakr’s Enmity Towards Ali Begin?
“Sa’id ibn al-Musayib asked Ali ibn al-Husayn (as):
May I be sacrificed for you, Abu Bakr was with Rasul Allah when he came to Medina - so where did he leave him?
He [the Imam] said: Abu Bakr came with Rasul Allah to the land of Qiba. So he [Rasul Allah] descended with them (the companions) waiting for the arrival of Ali.
So Abu Bakr told the Prophet: Rise with us to Medina, as the people have become pleased with your arrival and they are eager to receive your presence among them. So rise with us to them, and do not reside here waiting for Ali because I do not think he is coming to you for at least a month maximum.
So Rasul Allah told him [i.e, Abu Bakr]: No, he (Ali) is rather quite fast. And I am not moving from my place until my cousin and brother in the sake of Allah, and the most beloved of the Ahlulbayt to me comes. As he has protected me with his soul from the mishrikeen.
He [Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn] said: And that is when Abu Bakr became angry, and his heart experienced disgust out of envy for Ali. And this was the first enmity that was expressed [by Abu Bakr] towards Rasul Allah with regards to Ali, and it was his first dispute over Rasul Allah.
So he [Abu Bakr] left until he reached Medina and deviated from Rasul Allah in Qiba - who still stood there waiting for Ali.”
فقال سعيد بن المسيب لعلي بن الحسين (عليهما السلام): جعلت فداك كان أبو بكر مع رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) حين أقبل إلى المدينةفأين فارقه؟ فقال: إن أبا بكر لما قدم رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) إلى قبا فنزل بهم ينتظر قدوم علي (عليه السلام) فقال له أبو بكر: انهضبنا إلى المدينة فإن القوم قد فرحوا بقدومك وهم يستريثون إقبالك إليهم (2) فانطلق بنا ولا تقم ههنا تنتظر عليا فما أظنه يقدم عليك إلى شهر،فقال له رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): كلا ما أسرعه ولست أريم (3) حتى يقدم ابن عمي وأخي في الله عز وجل وأحب أهل بيتي إلي فقدوقاني بنفسه من المشركين، قال: فغضب عند ذلك أبو بكر واشمأز وداخله من ذلك حسد لعلي (عليه السلام) وكان ذلك أول عداوة بدت منهلرسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) في علي (عليه السلام) وأول خلاف على رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، فانطلق حتى دخل المدينة وتخلفرسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) بقبا ينتظر عليا (عليه السلام).
