Cryptic names of the Imams
Cryptic names for Imams
Introduction:
When the Imams’ companions would travel in the Abbasid era, and they carry with them confidential correspondance from their Imam - or they have Shi’i ahadith in their possession, they would attempt to obfuscate the names of the Imams either to protect the Imams or the Imams’ secret order.
They did so by assigning cryptic names to the Imams, of which below are some examples:
- Imams:
Al-Hukama’ - men of wisdom
“Al-Mu’ala ibn Muhammad narrated (in a marfu’ fashion), from some of the men of wisdom’”
الحسين بن محمد الأشعري، عن معلى بن محمد رفعه، عن بعض الحكماء (1) قال
Ahadihim - one of them
“Al-Nawfali narrated from one of them (peace be upon them)”
طب الأئمة: الخضر بن محمد، عن الخزازيني، عن محمد بن العباس، عن عبد الله بن الفضل النوفلي، عن أحدهم عليهم السلام قال: ما قرأتالحمد سبعين مرة إلا سكن،
وإن شئتم فجربوا ولا تشكوا
- Imam al-Kadhim:
Rajulun Salih - A good man
“Ali ibn Abi Hamza narrated from a good man, I asked him: ...”
الشيخ من كتاب محمد بن أحمد بن يحيى، عن معاوية بن حكيم، عن عبد الله بن المغيرة، عن علي بن أبي حمزة، عن رجل صالح قال: سألتهعن رجل يشك فلا يدري واحدة صلى أم ثنتين أو ثلاثا أو أربعا تلتبس عليه صلاته، قال: كل ذا؟ قال: قلت: نعم، قال: فليمض في صلاتهويتعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم، فإنه يوشك أن يذهب عنه (2).
Al-Abd al-Salih - The righteous slave
“Narrated Musa ibn Bakr, from the righteous slave”
- أمالي الطوسي: عن موسى بن بكر، عن العبد الصالح (عليه السلام) مثله
Al-‘Alim - The scholar
“I narrate from the scholar (as) that he said..”
فقه الرضا عليه السلام: أروي عن العالم عليه السلام أنه قال: الحمية رأس كل دواء (2)، والمعدة بيت الأدواء، وعود بدنا ما تعود.
- Imam al-Hadi
Al-Tayyib - the good (man)
“Muhammad ibn Raja’ al-Arjani:
He narrated from the good man (as)”
